Doe Deere: Artist, CEO, and Founder of Lime Crime

Doe Deere, born Kseniya Vorotova in Izhevsk, Russia is a successful 36 year old fashion and makeup designer. Founder and CEO of the vegan cosmetics line called Lime Crime, Deere posses a unique creative history that manifests itself in the vibrancy of her makeup line.

After moving to New York at the age of 17, Deere enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology to study fashion design and illustration. Deere, however, left the program early to embark on her own creative journey. As an independent fashion designer, Deere created her own clothing line on Ebay called Lime Crime. As an independent start-up, Deere had to model her own creations for her online customers, and began creating vibrant makeup looks to accompany her designs. From here, Lime Crime, the cosmetics line, was born.

Founded in 2008, Deere’s cosmetics line that makes use of synthetic beeswax is held as a vegan and cruelty free alternative to many mainstream cosmetic brands. Moreover, Deere believed that what her brand had to offer that mainstream cosmetics fell short of was the availability of vibrant and mystical shades of makeup that were highly pigmented and that stayed true to color. The company was so focused on this idea of offering a new and exciting palette of colors that its first slogan was “It’s so bright, it’s illegal.” The company currently operates out of Los Angeles where Deere, her husband, and their three very loved cats live. Deere retains 100 percent control over the creative and entrepreneurial direction of her company and works very closely with her team of cosmetics experts.

In an interview with Galore Magazine, Deere talks about her company, Lime Crime as a name and brand, and what she believes that it represents and stands for. In her own words, Deere says “today, the name [Lime Crime] stands for color revolution, breaking the rules, and not being afraid to color outside the lines! It encourages us to have fun with color and not to take ourselves too seriously.” When asked about her clientele and fan base, whom she refers to as “unicorns,” Deere said “to me, unicorns are people who were born different, are aware of it and proud. I think it takes a very specific kind of a person to rock the shades we produce — someone brave, someone who loves color, someone who defies expectations. In other words, a true unicorn!”

Self-named the Unicorn Queen, Doe Deere also runs her own blog titled “The Doe Deere Blogazine: Tales of the Unicorn Queen.” Her blog is where Deere touches base with her fans and the world and often discusses things related to fashion, Lime Crime, and life in general.

As a young female entrepreneur, Doe Deere is an inspiration to young girls everywhere. Not only does Deere empower young girls to be unconventional, bold, and creative with the dynamic variety of her cosmetics line, but provides an inspirational narrative of being a successful, self-made artist and businesswoman.
