Lime Crime’s Doe Deere

Doe Deere, the founder of the highly successful cosmetics (and now hair dye) company recently shared with the UK’s Stylist magazine some tips for aspiring makeup businesswomen, how packaging plays a huge role for customers, and how being unique is to be celebrated.

Doe Deere actually first started Lime Crime through eBay, in which she had her own DIY makeup line set up; this is when Deere claims that she came to realize that “color” was something she loved and no longer was afraid of. She states that later on, officially four years later, in 2008 she launched today’s highly successful cosmetics company, Lime Crime, which she is so proud of. She is proud to now have a team, in which she brainstorms with for new names, colors, and shapes of her makeup palettes. She states that once upon a time, she did all of this on her own, and didn’t even dream of having a “team” that she could call her own to work with and collaborate on projects with.

Deere also states that packaging is also quite important, as it communicates “the value and quality” of the product that is on the inside. Many customers first (obviously) look at the packaging and the effort that was put into creating that.

As for the advice that she would give to young women who want to start their own makeup or fashion line, she states to look for products or the types of items that you would like to see more on the store shelves for yourself or your friends, but there isn’t any of. So, she states, you go out and create that; and that is exactly how Lime Crime began!

She just added colors and fun products, and today even hair dyes that she could not find in the stores, but always wanted for herself.

Deere is really one to stand out herself, as the face and owner of her company Lime Crime, as she is always sport bold makeup looks and hair colors. Deere’s current hair color of choice is a bright and very bold red shade. Deere states that her idea of success is being able to “resonate with your audience” to the point that they are essentially “proud” to wear your products out in public and really embrace the looks that you help them achieve.

Deere has made a Polly Pocket (the great children’s toy, that many of us remember growing up playing with, either us or our siblings) inspired makeup palette. She also has great makeup collaborations with the cosmetics company, Feelunique. She is proud of their collaborations as a team. Together, they’ve come up with bright and vibrant colors for Lime Crime’s makeup palettes.

She states that of challenges with her company, Lime Crime that they learn to overcome and grow from them. And that this is what makes them a company that will continue to succeed further and further in the makeup industry.

She states that a role model for her in the entrepreneur game is the founder of the company, WIldfox, Kimberley Gordon, who’s company also started around 2008, around the time Lime Crime started.
